Inscribed and signed by the late Kentucky/Indiana author and historian, Dr. Carl Bogardus, who was the official historian of Scott County, Indiana, and who founded the Gallatin County, Kentucky Historical Society. He was one of the foremost river historians of his day. A fictional retelling of a story that Hay had heard from a schoolmate in Warsaw, Illinois. His friend's father had sacrificed his life while saving many passengers during a fire onboard the steamboat Fashion. JIM BLUDSO was first printed in the New York Weekly Tribune, in December, 1870, then in a small paperback version, and finally was included in Hay's book of poems entitled PIKE COUNTY BALLADS. Hay served as secretary to Abraham Lincoln, and, with his friend, John Nicolay, wrote one of the better biographies of the president. Signed by Author(s).
