Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition, Limited Edition. Offering this rare signed copy of "The Elegant Lotus: The Art and Life of Chang Shangpu (Constance Chang or Zhang)," edited by Chu-Tsing Li & He Li. San Francisco: Asian Art Museum (Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture), 2004, limited first edition (one of 1,000 copies). Glossy illustrated softcover, pp. 103, in English with Taiwanese Chinese notes. This exhibit catalog documents the comprehensive retrospective exhibition of the celebrated 20th-century Chinese abstract painter Constance Chang. It features over 50 color and black-and-white reproductions of her artwork, early biographical photographs from her career in Shanghai and Hong Kong, scholarly essays by Chu-Tsing Li, and valuable reference tools including historical signature/seal marks. The Signature: To the best of my knowledge, this is an actual signature of the artist - signed vertically on the title page with what looks like a felt-tip marker, possibly at an exhibit event. The paper quality is such that there is no visible bleed-through from the ink nor indentation from the soft-tipped pen. But there is a visible sheen to the ink when held at an angle to the light, and using a jeweler's loupe, you can see wispy fine lines off the strokes that would point to an actual signature instead of a printing. Also, the signature shows similarities to some of the signatures on the paintings in the catalog, albeit the autograph in the book has a more fluid style. I found no other signed copies available online for comparison. Overall condition is Very Good. Cover is clean and smooth, small spine crease is only visible flaw. Original Asian Art Museum price tag on back. Aside from the signature, interior is clean and bright with no writing, creases or tears. A lovely autographed limited edition copy! Chinese American artist Connie Chang (Zhang Shangpu) (1918-2021) was born in the Jiangsu province, grew up in Nanjing, and was a well known actress in the Chinese film industry in the 1930's and 40's. She moved to Hong Kong in 1948, studied with Chao Shao-an, Wong Po-yeh, and Lui Shou-kwan in the 1960s, and was a renowned female artist for a time in Hong Kong. She moved to San Francisco in 1974.
