Le roi Louis-Philippe après avoir pris la décision en 1833 de transformer le château de Versailles en musée décida de mettre à la portée de tous par la gravure les collections du palais. L'oeuvre fut confiée à Charles Gavard ( 1794-1871) qui développa le panthographe et le diagraphe pour une réduction optimale des sujets Etat : agréable estampe (ref-R3701).
