The infamous case of the university whose faculty prematurely condemned members of its own (all white) lacrosse team when a black stripper accused those young men of rape, based on a narrative of "white privilege." The lacrosse program was suspended and Coach Pressler was forced to resign. At least one professor even started giving the lacrosse players "flunking" grades (unrelated to their academic performance) upon the accusations being made public. The complainant changed her story many times, finally even dropping the assertion that she had been "penetrated" (an element necessary for a charge of rape.) DNA evidence -- withheld by the prosecution from the defense in what defense lawyers described as "a game of hide-and-seek" -- proved the complainant had indeed had sex with at least four men in the days before the alleged crime (she had said she had not had sex for a week), but that none of the lacrosse players had been involved. All were exonerated, after running up $30 million in legal bills. Despicable County District Attorney Mike Nifong, who used the case for political advantage with black and liberal voters, was disbarred after this book was published, served one day in jail for contempt, and filed for bankruptcy protection in the face of $180 million in civil suits. He was the first sitting district attorney in the history of North Carolina to be disbarred. Subsequently, murder convictions against Darryl Howard, who at that time had been imprisoned for murder for 20 years in an unrelated case, were vacated on the grounds that prosecutor Nifong had withheld DNA evidence in HIS trial. That evidence, some of which wasn't tested until 2010, implicated two other men and cleared Howard, who walked free after 21 years. All prospective jurors in rape and murder cases should read this book. 321 pp. Reduced from $32.
