Complete single-volume reprint edition. [2], 495 pages. Hardcover: H 19.5cm x L 13.25cm. Original dark brown pebbled cloth; mild staining with light discoloration to boards and spine; spine lightly cocked with slight fraying at ends and small surface chip to cloth near heel; spine's gilt stamping still easily legible but not vibrant; mild bumping to board corners with cloth worn at bottom corners. Some small stains upon toned edges. Interior leaves well toned as paper stock is not of great quality; pages 81-88 slightly pulled; top corner of pages 89-90 creased from past fold-down. Binding remains quite firm. A wonderful account of mid-nineteenth century Parisian life by Sir Francis Head whose Francophile travelogue was met with some Francophobe attitudes by fellow Englishmen upon the release of the book's two-volume first edition published by John Murray in London in 1851. The American first edition was published in New York by G.P. Putnam in 1852. This single-volume Doolady edition features the entire text (unabridged and unedited) of the original two-volume set which may explain the compactness of the book's typeset. Still an attractive good+ antiquarian copy.
