Two plates slightly smaller in size, probably added from another copy. This copy is without the portrait, which was published separately and only sometimes bound together with the work. Beautiful contemporary half calf on marbled boards, flat spine decorated in gilt, top of spine with small repair. Bookplate (Tidö). First edition of this very attractive work on Turkey and its customs and manners. It was originally published in twelve separate parts, limited to about 525 copies. Compiled by Johan Hedenborg, a Swedish natural historian who in 1825 was appointed medical adviser to the Swedish Ambassador C.G. Löwenhielm in Constantinople. Atabey 567. Blackmer 800. First edition. - When Count Loevenhjelm was appointed Swedish ambassador to the Porte, the naturalist Hedenborg (1787-1865) accompanied him as his medical attendant. He published another work on Egypt and died in Rhodes. The attractive plates in this present work depict the costumes of a wide range of the inhabitants of Constantinople. - Binding rubbed; interior browned, showing the occasional fingerstain. Contemporary half calf, rather worn, with richly gilt spine. Marbled edges. Board paper decorated in blind to a floral design. Gilt decor on spine oxidized, joints worn, in particular the rear one. Some browning throughout. Marks from a bookmarker in inner margin on pp. 170-71. Bookplate of Gösta Bodman. All published. The content is to a large extent a peculiar piece of plagiarism, which has been copied from Jacob Berggren's travel book, "Resor i Europa och Österländerna" (1826-28), despite the fact that Hedenborg had visited the places himself. Johan Hedenborg (1786-1865) studied medicine, but his wanderlust got the better of him and his travels in the Orient and in North Africa became the start of a significant achievement as a collector. His important collections of natural history specimens, antiques, coins, oriental manuscripts and books, is nowadays divided between various Swedish museums and libraries.
