Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Profusely illustrated throughout in line and greyscale with colour illustrated to rear. Illustrations by Charles L. Bull, Hassall, Heffe and S.S. Buckman and others. (illustrator). 1st Edition. A near-Fine copy of this famous transatlantic magazine in its original coloured, art nouveau beveled boards, red speckled edges and attractive gilt blocking to spine and upper board. Minor light scratching to lower half of front cover and some crumpling to top and tail of spine, otherwise a clean, bright and strong square binding. Unusual for such a thick (744 page) volume. Clean floral end-papers with no inscription. Appears unmarked throughout with no marking and no browning or tinting on the coated paper. Superb mixed-media illustrations from line drawings through photographic and collotype to a polychrome section at the rear. All the usual wide range of interesting topics: The American Girl (by Lenore Van der Veer), SF Cody inventor of the man-lifting kite, Alphonso XIII of Spain, the Great Ko-Ko clown, celebrities and their heads, modern gamblers, the National Trust (then just 8 years old), Radium, Waimangu Geyser, Ellis Island, full-page portraits of famous men, animal art and dog stories, Yachting, Wireless telegraphy, Californian lumber-chutes, etc., etc. PLUS fiction: the first appearance in print of The Food of the Gods (H.G. Wells) chapters 1-3 in Book 1, a science fiction novel first published in book form in 1904. Science tampers with nature in rural Kent and a new food creates giant rats and other abnormalities Romance of a Razorback, a story referring to Conan Doyle by Orme Agnus, The Chronicles of Don Q (complete) by K and Hesketh Prichard, The Revolt of the Blackfoot, a County Clare Angel story, and The Black Hands story by Albert B Paine where a white patient injected by opiates after an accident awakes to find something that 'makes his heart stop' - his skin has turned black, his subsequent race-based difficulties end tragically. Altogether an impressive volume both in appearance and content, very much of its age. Other similar volumes available.
