Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering on front cover. No lettering on spine. 5 1/4" x 6." Unpaginated, one accordion leaf (composed of two leaves adhered together) with eighteen panels, complete. Many black-and-white illustrations, complete. Illustrations are not photographic but are done in a style featuring distinct outlines (that may have been modeled after photos). Pages are very clean and intact except for tiny spots of rubbing affecting a minimal amount of text and illustrations, light age toning, some pieces of paper missing from the spine (likely due to dampstaining), and some rippling and staining on back pastedown and verso of last panel. Covers are clean and intact except for dampstaining on back and along spine (cloth is stained and has rippling), fading to gilt lettering, slight darkening and rubbing, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. Charming viewbook featuring black-and-white illustrated views in California. Principally illustrations with brief captions describing the subject. The printing technique for the illustrations is likely Glaser/Frey lithography, a form of lithography that was developed in Germany by Louis Glaser of Leipzig and Charles Frey of Frankfurt. Some American publishers, such as C. P. Heininger, published locally but had the lithographs of said publications printed in Germany. Some panels have more than one illustration. The illustrations show the following: "State Capitol at Sacramento," "University of California, Berkeley," "Publishing information for "California Institution for the Deaf, Dumb & Blind. Berkeley," "California Military Academy, Oakland," "State Agricultural & Industrial Exposition Building Sacramento," "Sutter's Fort in 1847, Sacramento," "The First Soldier Quarter's & Custom House of the U. S. in Cal., Taken from the Mexicans July 7th 1846, Monterey," "Doc [sic?] at San Pedro, Wilmington Harbor," "Semi-Tropical Plants & Historical Building," "Vernal Falls, Yosemite Valley," "Driving Through a Big Tree of Inolumna Grove, Diameter 30 Feet, 8 Inches," "Natural Wonders of Sonoma Country" [depictions of sequoia trees and geysers], "Birds-Eye View of Santa Cruz," "On the Cliff Road, Near Santa Cruz," "Natural Bridge Near Santa Cruz," "Semi Tropical Plants," "Cliff House & Seal Rocks, San Francisco," "Southern Pacific R. R., Transfer Steamer 'Solano' Port Costa," "Hotel del Monte & Environs, Monterey," "State Normal School San Jose," "Paraiso Springs. Monterey County," "Lake Tahoe Sierra Mountains, 1700 Deep, 6250 Feet Above the Sea," "Donner Lake, Sierra Nevada Mountains Near Truckee," "Semi Tropical Plants" [more depictions of various plants], "Grape Vine. Orange Tree & Horned Toad," "Vineyard & Raising Drying," "Star Oil Works, San Fernando District as Seen from S. P. R. R.," "The California Powder Works as Seen from S. P. C. R. R. Near Santa Cruz," and "The Loop Tunnel No. 9. Tehachapi Pass S. P. R. R." Publishing information for C. P. Heininger of San Francisco, California is on back pastedown: "C. P. Heininger, Publisher of View Albums, Historical References and Guides, of All the Principal Points on the Pacific Coast. Special Designs of Albums and Business Cards to Order. Manufacturer of Walking Canes and Fancy Novelties, of Native Woods and Big Tree Bark. San Francisco, Cal." C. P. Heininger & Company was founded by Charles Heininger (1857-1943) in 1881 or 1882. Heininger was originally from Philadelphia but moved to San Francisco in 1881. He began his business as a dealer of smoking pipes but ventured into the publishing industry by 1885. In 1889, Heininger resumed his business in manufacturing and importing pipes and smoking accessories which continued until at least 1924. Heininger also sold "novelties" as seen in the back pastedown of this book. It is unclear how long C. P. Heininger & Co. was active, but the company appears to have been open until at least 1926 or 1927.
