Recensie(s) Daniel Heinsius (1580-1655) wordt in de Nederlandse letterkunde beschouwd als een belangrijk schrijver en dichter. Hij schreef onder andere klassieke drama's en minnedichten. Het werk dat hier aan de orde is, is een leerdicht dat is geinspir…eerd op schrijvers uit de klassieke oudheid zoals Lucretius en Vergilius. Heinsius schreef het in het Latijn. Het in 1621 verschenen werk kreeg de titel 'De Contemptu Mortis' letterlijk te vertalen als 'Over de verachting van de dood'. Jan Bloemendaal, classicus/neerlandicus en Jan Steenbeek, bij leven docent oude Nederlandse letterkunde aan de Universiteit van Utrecht, vertaalden het werk in modern Nederlands. In deze uitgave is naast de oorspronkelijke Latijnse tekst de vertaling afgedrukt. Daarna volgen het kritisch apparaat en de commentaar. Als een soort toegift is de vertaling van Jacobus Zevecotius uit 1625 afgedrukt. Een register van namen en zaken besluit het geheel. Het thema 'de verachting van de dood' heeft een lange traditie. Het komt erop neer dat je de dood niet hoeft te vrezen om diverse redenen: onsterfelijkheid van de ziel, en de ellende van het aardse bestaan, gedachten die tijdgenoten wel aanspraken. Tegenwoordig denken velen daar anders over, maar dit leerdicht moet men dan ook in de tijd plaatsen.
