Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Schutzumschlag mit Randläsuren und kleinen Einrissen, Buchrücken weist einen Kratzer und leichte Verschmutzungen auf, Buchschnitt stockfleckig, viele Bleistiftanstreichungen und -anmerkungen im Buch, einige Seiten weisen Knicke auf / dust jacket with edge wear and small tears, spine has a scratch and light soiling, book edges foxed, many pencil marks and annotations in book, some pages have creases. - "All in all, I believe that this work offers significant new insights into two areas of scholarship and critical inquiry, discharges its task with imagination, verve, and economy, and will prove to be an important contribution to our understanding of how forms evolve in literary and social contexts. This work is a giant stride away from taxonomic study toward a community of letters where ancient works comfortably consort with the most modern of literary problems." Charles Witke, The University of Michigan The Novel before the Novel traces the central values, techniques, and conventions in the European tradition of narrative art by cogently and elegantly exploring a disparate body of Greek and Latin "romances" written between the third century b.c. and the fourth century a.d. Heiserman sets forth and criticizesseveral approaches to this enormous body of fiction: psychoanalytic criticism, Marxist criticism, and formalist and structuralist criticism. His "reasoned inquiry" brings to light the aesthetic and psychological as well as the cultural strengths of the ancient stories while probing crucial questions on the origin and development of literary genres. Beginning with the Argonautica of Apollonius, Heiserman presents incisive essays on individual works, following them with dialogues which examine the literary and critical implications of the ideas presented. Such works as Chariton's Chaereas and Callirrhoe; Achilles Tatius' Clitophon; Longus' Daphnis and Chloe; Apuleius' The Golden Ass; and Heliodorus' Aethiopica receive extended treatment. In relating the stories, Heiserman does justice both to their structural elements and to the way that these express the themes and beliefs of the work. He supplies various kinds of background informationon Alexandrian culture, for example, or classical comic theory-tying the various strands together with the wider evaluative assessments in dialogue form. Through this pluralistic framework, The Novel before the Novel acknowledges several searching approaches to literary criticism yet refuses to yield to formulaic simplicity. With wit, perspicacity, and great good humor, Heiserman illumines these fundamental texts and expands our understanding of what "romance" and "novel" truly signify. / CONTENTS Prefatory Note Preface 1 Erotic Suffering 2 Resourceless Jason 3 Discussion One 4 Bits and Epitomes 5 Discussion Two 6 Aphrodisian Chastity 7 Discussion Three 8 Antonine Comedy 9 Discussion Four 10 Divine Romance Notes Index.
