Photographic Re-productions of Antique Buttons (Tacoma, WA: Helen Wegener, 1941) is a remarkable early American reference work for button collectors, issued as a punched loose-leaf manual to enable updates and working use. This example is housed in a period Irving-P…itt No. 509 leather loose-leaf binder (patented 1904/1905), consistent with known early presentations. The volume includes photographic plates and typed text leaves, arranged in alternating plate/text sequence as originally issued. Wegener's plates - high-contrast monochrome reproductions - document a wide stylistic and chronological range of antique buttons, many rare and some now scarcely seen outside museum collections or early collectors' archives. This copy retains substantial contemporary collector/dealer annotations throughout, significantly enhancing its research value. The annotations including pricing, rarity notes, identifications, cross-references, and corrections - are in the hand of Alice Helgestad, whose name appears on the title leaf as well as on the inserted title index ('By Alice Helgestad'). Internal evidence strongly suggests Helgestad used this volume as her active working catalog while buying and selling antique buttons in the mid-20th century. Her notes demonstrate detailed subject knowledge (e.g., mythological identifications, theater references, historical subjects, biblically themed buttons, opera motifs, and manufacturer attribution), making this an unusually rich primary source for provenance research and valuation history. Laid in are several pieces of period ephemera: a Victorian engraving ('Fall of the Bastille'), handwritten subject-matter list (e.g., Minerva, King Arthur, Egyptian, Cupid, Classic Heads), and an early multi-page Title Index with Helgestad's pencil ownership note. These materials underscore the book's working-life as a dealer's reference and offer an intimate look at the taxonomy and commercial understanding of button collecting circa 1940s-60s. Condition: Good (binder), Very Good+ (contents). The original black leather Irving-Pitt binder shows expected age wear: rubbing, edge abrasion, loss to spine label, and corner rounding, but remains fully functional with intact rings. Contents exhibit toning, scattered handling marks, and light staining to a few leaves, consistent with reference use. Plates remain crisp and clear; text leaves legible with no loss except where owner clipped (suggesting a sale or trade had occurred.) The annotations are historically valuable and should be considered part of the volume's provenance and research significance, not defects. Edition/Printing Determination: Published by the author in 1941; no later printings known. Characteristics including title leaf dated 1941, early plate numbering, original paper stock, contemporary binder, and period annotations confirm this as a First (and only) Edition of this scarce, self-published reference. Helen Wegener of Tacoma, Washington, was an early and influential compiler of visual reference material for American button collectors. Her 1941 self-published manual predates most organized collector societies and was among the first attempts to standardize identification through photographic reproduction.
