Er war der Sohn einer armen jüdischen Familie. Mit vierzehn Jahren wurde er Arbeiter in einer Handschuh-Fabrik. Er zählte bald zu den bekannteren Vertretern der polnischen proletarischen Dichtung. Von 1937 bis 1939 lebte er in Belgien und Paris. Später kehrte er nach Warschau zurück und floh dann vor dem Nationalsozialismus nach Bialystok. Nach dem Angriff auf die Sowjetunion tauchte er in Alma-Ata unter, 1947 kehrte er nach Polen zurück, um am Wiederaufbau des jüdisch-kulturellen Lebens teilzunehmen.
