In 1847, in Oregon territory a misunderstanding between Cayuse Indians and immigrant white settlers led to a fatal dispute that has become known as the Whitman Massacre. The book accounts for 6 specific dead, although 14 died. Measles and other frontier diseases had already ravaged both sides . 95 pages, incl. 3 supplemental letters at the end. Illus. by b/w repro's of paintings by the author. Cond: Tan and brown paper wrapper w/ an illus. of an ox drawn wagon on the cover and author's photo on back cover. Light chips and wear at most corners and edges. Binding tight, general soiling. Many stamps, stickers and pen marks by p/o. VERY GOOD reading copy. No tears. Quote (p. 17) : " .the valley below, the Chief wheeled his horse and rode back along the train of the wagons, lifting the wagon cover of each, looking for a white girl with golden hair and blue eyes, like Narcissa Whitman ." The author makes it plain that only a few of the Cayuse tribe took part in the massacre and how the rest of the tribe rushed in and saved the lives of the women and children." Former owner's signature on ffep. In the Intro, Fred Lockley wrote that Helm wrote her book to "perpetuate the memory of her mother, and other members of the Sager family, as well as Dr. and Mrs. Whitman." Near find in complete, pc dj with some edge wear and lower corner discoloration from an oil type stain.
