Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. At the height of his career, J.E.H. MacDonalds paintings and oil sketches reveal a mastery of colour mixing, a sureness of brushstroke, and a deep understanding of compositional design. His striking landscapes and views of nature are an important artistic legacy and confirm his essential place among the Group of Seven painters. J.E.H. MacDonald Up Close provides a fresh interpretation of MacDonalds artistic development and sheds new light on questions of authenticity and dating surrounding MacDonalds paintings. Here art conservation experts Kate Helwig and Alison Douglas combine rigorous scientific analysis with a close visual examination of MacDonalds work to focus on his materials and techniques. Exploring the interface between art history and science, Helwig and Douglas use excerpts from MacDonalds diaries, letters, and lectures to provide socio-historical context to their in-depth reading of the paintings as physical objects.Helwig and Douglass fascinating text is accompanied not only by reproductions of key artworks, but also by never-before-seen photographs taken through a microscope. These unique, close-up views of MacDonalds working methods reveal the texture of his brushstrokes and the characteristic ways he layered and mixed his paint. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. Jean Paul Riopelle (1923?2002) was one of the most important Canadian artists of the twentieth century, yet he is relatively unknown in the U.S. He began his career in Montreal in the 1940s, where he played a role in the influential Automatist movement, and established his reputation in the burgeoning art scene of postwar Paris, where his circle included Andrà Breton, Samuel Beckett, and Sam Francis. During his career, Riopelle produced over six thousand works, including more than two thousand paintings. This volume, the second in the Artist?s Materials series, grew out of a research project of the Canadian Conservation Institute. Initial chapters present an overview of Riopelle?s life and situate his work within the context of twentieth-century art. Subsequent chapters address Riopelle?s materials and techniques, focusing on his oil paintings and mixed media works, and on conservation issues. The preface is by Yseult Riopelle, the artist?s eldest daughter and editor of his catalogue raisonnà . This first book-length study of the artist in English will interest curators, conservators, conservation scientists, and general readers.
