First Edition
First Edition. Oblong octavo (20cm x 28cm). Stapled pictorial wrappers; two preliminary pages, [2] pp.text, 14 unnumbered leaves of photographic plates (halftones) of which 8 are folding panoramas. Map, showing the portions of the city affected by the fire, inside front wrapper. Clean and bright, with just mild external wear - Very Good. A quite extraordinary view-book, containing panoramic scenes of Baltimore following the Great Fire of 1904, which destroyed large portions of the downtown and inner harbor. The photographer and author Jack Hemment had been a correspondent for the Hearst Newspapers during the Spanish-American War; his introductory text provides a brief narrative of events from the time the first was discovered until it was finally extinguished three days later. The total damage was estimated at the astronomical sum of thirty million dollars, well over a billion dollars in today's currency. A fragile book, seldom found in good condition - this a remarkably fresh, unsoiled example.
