It recounts how the author discovered the victims of the massacre, who had secretly been buried, and how the military rulers liquidated their political opponents. The book continues with the nationalization of the mines and the land reform that followed the 1952 revolution. It is based on the author's experiences in Bolivia. Klaus Barbie's first job in Bolivia was with a saw mill owned by the author and three friends. The author knew Hans Ertl and his daughter Monika who was killed trying to kidnap Barbie. (Klaus and Monika were the subjects of separate documentary films.) The author was in Bolivia when Che Guevara was executed. The book sheds light on the disappearances in Argentina in the 1970's. It has vignettes of many interesting persons the author knew, such as the French novelist Romain Gary and the Bolivian archaeologist Arturo Posnansky and his wife Alicia. The book comments on the coca economy of Bolivia. It recounts how a lone woman took tens of thousands of dollars in cash to a roadside money changer in La Paz. One section of the book tells how the author, who fled Nazi Germany on Christmas eve 1938, sent a hot~air balloon with an anti~Nazi flag over a crowded stadium in Hitler's Vienna, and how he survived the Night of Broken Glass. The book describes many dramatic events, which the author witnessed and often participated in. Forty~three black~and~white photographs and 25 drawings and illustrations document and enliven the book. Fred Hendel was born in Vienna, Austria in 1916. After fleeing Nazi Germany, Hendel went to Bolivia where he lived for the next seventeen years.
