Published by Writers' Club of the College of Puget Sound, 1936
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good-. Green card covers, staple-bound. Tip of bottom corner of pages are scorched and lightly chipped (not affecting any text), else clean. Includes a handful of linoprint-type illustrations. 23, [1] pages. A scarce copy of Tide, the literary journal of the Writers' Club of the College of Puget Sound. This issue features a piece by Herbert Arntson (1911-1982), who went on to become an award-winning author of juvenile historical novels set in the pioneer milieu of Oregon and Washington. He served on the faculty of Washington State University, 1946-1974, where he was head of the creative writing program. (His papers are collected at the University of Oregon Libraries Special Collections). One of the longer prose pieces is a story titled, ''The Class Struggle in Yelm, Washington,'' by James Docherty. It's a quirky tale that centers on a sketchy communist barber and a pro-fascist editor of a local newspaper. This issue also includes a book review by Francis Galbraith, who became the U.S. Ambassador to Singapore, 1966-1969, and Indonesia, 1969-1974. (The other brief book reviews cover Aldous Huxley and Charles Erskine Scott Wood). Dorothy Belle Harriss (m. Cairnes) contributes a poem. In January 1937, she became the first woman to serve as President of the University of Puget Sound Student Body. The cover was done by Maurita Shank (m. Runions), president of the C.P.S. Art Club.

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Sold at 16, Upper Sackville Street and at the Offices of the Church Missionary Society, Scottish Missionary Society, Jews Society, London Missionary Society, and Continental Society, and at the House of the Moravian Ministers. Later unprinted laid paper wraps with "Busbridge & Co Superfine" watermark 16x24cm. (4)pp title, dedication, and opening statement; 29pp table; (3)pp data tables, Index and Errata. Very good, foxed. Prepared in support of a very early unstated edition of a "Missionary Map of the World", it is not recorded on Worldcat or Library Hub, which list other contemporary missionary gazetteers. It contains significant detail "found impossible" to include on the map itself. Dated Dublin, 1830, it was written by "The Compilers" (unnamed) for the Reverends Robert Herbert Nixon and Joseph Henderson Singer, Secretaries to the Hibernian Church Missionary Society (HCMS). The HCMS was founded in Dublin in 1814 by the Reverend Benjamin Williams Mathias, who had also formed the Hibernian Bible Society in 1806. It gathers information from over 30 Societies. The table (pp1-29) arranges Stations by region: Western Africa, South Africa, African Islands, Inland Seas, Siberia, China, India beyond the Ganges, India with the Ganges, Ceylon, Indian Archipelago, Australasia, Polynesia, America, Guiana and West Indies, North American Indians, Labrador, Greenland, and Continental Europe, subdivided by sub-region or tribe. Columns describe location with map coordinates, populations, Society affiliations, date established, number of schools, number of scholars, names of Missionaries and other labourers, with other observations and detailed footnotes. p(30) contains several tables. One lists 145 languages and dialects for Scriptures distributed, printed, translated or promoted by the British and Foreign Bible Society. Another 6.1M Bibles and Testaments issued by the Society broken down by home and abroad. And another annual expenditure by that Society for its first 25 years, a total of £1.6M to date, of which £104K with income of £86K in the 25th year for example. pp(31)-(32) contain Index and Errata.

Add to basketCondition: Good. Photograph album of Trooper Herbert Stephen Henderson (1870-1942), of the "Rhodesia Horse", Bulawayo Field Force. Henderson was the first person to receive the Victoria Cross on Rhodesian soil. He had saved the life of an injured member of his unit when guiding him through 56km of hostile Matabele territory outside Bulawayo. He was presented his Victoria Cross by Lord Milner at the opening of the Bulawayo Railway on 4 November 1897. Trooper Henderson's daughter-in-law, Norma Henderson of Alstonville, New South Wales had inherited the album. On her passing she left it to a friend of South African origin, asking that it be taken back to South Africa. This was duly done and is how we acquired it. We sold it to a private collector in about 2006 and purchased it back from him in late 2025. There are 33 full-page photographs. Some marked in the negative with N.V.T. photo or S.T. Rhodesia photo Co. Or J.E.M. There are 38 postcard size photographs and 51 smaller photos. Images of Rhodesia and some of Grahamstown. Four of English actresses. Execution of spies at Bulawayo - an alternative image of the infamous scene used as the frontis for Olive Schreiner's book Trooper Peter Halket of Mashonaland (1897). The controversial image being expurgated from later copies of the book. Images of diamond mining, portraits of the Matabele and a group photo including Rhodes. Photos of Henderson's VC and three of a cricket match titled English vs Mashonalalnd. Possibly Lord Hawkes XI tour to Rhodesia in 1899. Some wear and cockling to the album boards. A few with chipped edges and some marks. Photographs generally in very good condition. Bound in a new half leather binding with cloth covered boards. First Edition. Condition: Good.
