Nearly four hundred letters are made available, many for the first time. Jack London's life often exceecded the variety and excitement of his novels. Oyster pirate, sealer, gold prospector, tramp, idol of the masses, revolutionary prophet: all that he had been is well known but remains extraordinarily nonetheless. If he had lived another year he might well have been buried near John Reed by the Kremlin walls. Of all the writers of our century, London had "star quality" and it is the real test of his power that humble people continue to read him with delight.
