Condition: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book, which has only one very distant forerunner authored by David A. Hills with David Nowell, represents a very big step that is the quantification of these problems and represents the twenty-five years¿ worth of work which have gone on at Oxford since the first book on the subject. Fatigue (popularly ¿metal fatigue¿) is the primary failure mode of all machines, engines, transmissions and indeed almost all mechanical devices. The propagation of cracks is well understood and is treated in the subject Fracture Mechanics. By contrast, the nucleation of cracks is very hard to quantify and this remains the case with so-called ¿free initiation¿ and, to a lesser extent, at cracks nucleated from stress raising features. But the third form of nucleation, where cracks start from the edges of rubbing components, that is, at joints, is potentially a very much better-defined environment, and therefore, the problem is amendable to attack by applied mechanics and experiment. The contents are of value both to those embarking on research on the subject and to practitioner in industry.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. First Edition. Folio half-leather and marbled boards. Textured marbled endpapers. Spine with four raised bands and in five compartments. Top edge gilt. Limited edition. This is copy #263/275. Illustrated throughout with plans, designs, architectural renderings, and engravings. Several large folding plates. Printed on a very heavy, thick paper. Wear along the spine edges and bands. Rubbing along with some narrow scrapes to a number of areas of the boards. A small, 1/2" light-colored stain toward the upper, front board. There is some splitting to the lower, front edge of the spine. There is a large amount of a type of foxing, the like of which I have not seen before. In another copy of this book, I have seen the same heavy foxing. There must be some unusual content in the paper used for the production of this massive book. It is contained in a period felt-lined wooden shipping or storage box. The box is quite worn. The upper hinged lid is broken at one hinge and is nearly so at the other. There is cracking to the wood but it seems to be quite solid. THIS VERY HEAVY BOOK MAY REQUIRE EXTRA POSTAGE. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall.

Rome 1919'.First French editions of both parts of this ambitious urban planning project envisioning a utopian world capital, in which art and architecture would function as vehicles of world peace. The Norwegian-American painter, sculptor, and urban planner Hendrik Christian Andersen was raised in Rhode Island and worked as Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's art teacher before travelling to Europe and settling in Rome, where he developed a network of expatriate patrons. The first part of his plan for a World City, Création d'un centre mondial de communication par Hendrik Christian Andersen, was co-authored by the architect Ernest Hébrard, and sets out Anderson's vision for his utopia, featuring an Olympic stadium, temples of the arts and sciences, an underground transport system, an International Court of Justice (a proto-UN of sorts), a monumental skyscraper known as the Tower of Progress, and seats of government. Andersen's Création was published in a limited number of copies at his own expense, to be sent to heads of state around the world (Mussolini had promised him land to realise his vision before later changing his mind) in the hopes of finding backing for his plan, but was interrupted by the advent of the First World War. After the war, Andersen produced a continuation of his vision, aided by his brother's widow, Olivia Cushing Andersen; it was published in Rome in simultaneous English and French editions available for general sale. Andersen's utopia resulted in ongoing disagreements with Henry James, thought to have been his lover, who wrote of his loathing for 'words like "World" anything they are to me mere monstrous sound without sense'. Provenance: Both the 1913 and 1918 editions were inscribed in Rome in 1919 to 'S[ua] E[ccellenza] il Ministro di Olanda', seemingly as part of Andersen's continued efforts to gain support from world leaders and diplomats; the recipient may have been the Dutch ambassador to Rome at the time, Jan Herman van Roijen. Add to basketFirst Edition. 47 x 34cm. Large folio hardcover in original gilt-decorated green cloth, xv + 102pp. Lavishly illustrated with fold-out engravings and photo-lithographs. An unusually ambitious visionary proposal for a vast imaginary centralised zone for world communication and world peace, containing a grand harbour with sculptures, an Olympic Centre of Physical Culture, a Music Conservatory, a School of Fine Arts and Museum of Casts, a Fountain of Life, etc. The architectural aspect was overseen by urban planner Ernest Hebrard. The project was to be located somewhere on a western Atlantic coast. The author sets out the philosophy thus: "from the beginning of time centralisation began, and it is legitimate to believe that to the end of time it will continue. Despite prejudice and war, suffering and bloodshed, an irresistible force ever draws men to a deeper understanding of a common aim. An invisible guiding hand unites all peoples by fraternal bonds of a grander sympathy. The memory of the lives that in the past courageously and faithfully gave their energy to the divine mission of unification, stimulates the desire of men to move in unison." Sporadic areas of quite heavy foxing, some offsetting between illustrations, otherwise tight and bright, and externally very well preserved.
