Newly bound in handsome 3/4 black cloth with black feather design paper, blue end papers. Rough cut paper edges are sometimes browned and crisp, text is clean and unmarked, wide margins, occasional light humidity staining in margins, very occasional small stains in the margins. The Arabic section paper is more browned and there are some humidity stains in the upper section of the page. Corrigenda between the two volumes paper was never separated. Half title in the Arabic part is worn and browned. No blanks. Very scarce at auction, a nice copy. Hendrik Arent Hamaker was a Dutch Assyriologist, philologist and orientalist, born in Amsterdam in 1789 and died in 1835. In 18151817 he was professor of Oriental languages at the Athenaeum of Franeker and lectured on Arabic, Chaldean and Syriac. From 18171822 he held the post of "extraordinary" professor Oriental languages) at Leiden University. Abu `Abdullah Muhammad Ibn 'Omar Ibn Waqid al-Aslami 747-823 commonly referred to as al-Waqidi, was an early Muslim historian and biographer of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, specializing in his military campaigns. A number of works chronicling the Islamic conquests have been attributed to al-Waqidi, though most of these attributions are now believed to be mistaken. The title of this book reflects the uncertainty: " A book of uncertain authorship on the conquest of Memphis and Alexandria, generally attributed to Abou Abdalla, son of Mohammed Omar, Wakidaeus, of Medina. (Arabic text from bibl. Lugd. Bat. )." ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 350 pages.

Only edition. - Pioneering specimen of a catalogue of oriental manuscripts in the Leiden library, with extensive extracts in Arabic, produced by H. A. Hamaker (1789-1835). "Ce spécimen ne contient que douze articles" (Brunet). "The descriptions of a mere twelve items on 238 pages illustrate the diligence with which the author attends to each and every title. Indeed, the final MS, the 'Qamus al-Muhit' of Firuzabadi, is discussed on no fewer than 60 pages. Each author is provided with extensive biographical excerpts with Latin translations, to which are added extremely detailed discussions of scholarly literature. Had Hamaker kept up this method for all the oriental MSS in Leiden, estimated at a number of some ten thousand, he should have wanted about 25,000 pages, not to mention hundreds of pages of indices. It is thus questionable whether Hamaker intended more with his 'Specimen' than to provide an example of an ideality which was to promote his planned catalogue [.]. And yet, had he been able to realize this ideal with the help of other scholars, this would have given to the world a source-based work of reference which would have preserved its value to this day, not superseded either by Brockelmann's 'Geschichte der arabischen Litteratur' nor by Sezgin's 'Geschichte des arabischen Schrifttums'" (cf. B. Liebrenz, Arabische, persische und türkische Handschriften in Leipzig [Leipzig 2008], p. 73). - Some creases to paper; binding rubbed and chafed in places.
