He worked for several horticultural virtuosi: James Sherard of Eltham, Lord Burlington of Londesborough and the Dukes of Devonshire. His circle of correspondents included many notable northern botanists, including Richard Richardson, Samuel Brewer and John Blackburne; but he was not a fan of Philip Miller of Chelsea. 324 pp., ill.
