The hilly topography of the city and surrounding area is clearly demonstrated, and Mount St. Helens can be seen in the fifth panel. The photographer, L. C. Henrichsen, was born in Denmark and moved to Portland in 1861, where he had a long career as a prominent jeweler and optician. The Willamette River runs through the center of the photographs, and Portland is shown rising up on either side, with houses, multi-story buildings, docks, warehouses, and a growing downtown. The hilly topography of the city and surrounding area is clearly demonstrated, and Mount St. Helens can be seen in the fifth panel. The photographer, L.C. Henrichsen, was born in Denmark and moved to Portland in 1861, where he had a long career as a prominent jeweler and optician. A scarce image, with OCLC locating only eight copies. A copy of this panorama sold at a Swann Galleries photography sale in 2014 for $4500 plus house premium (or net $5625). Showing the mountains, city scape, and the river of the great Northwest city. Silver prints, 12 measuring 7x9 and 2 measuring 7x7 3/4 inches (17.8x22.9 and 17.8x19.7 cm.), overall size 7x123 1/2 inches (17.8x313.7 cm.), with the photographer's credit and the date in the negative, and with a rule, number, and a caption printed on the mounts recto; each panel joined on verso. This rare panorama is not often seen on the market; A stunning view of turn-of-the-century Portland, Oregon depicting a west to east view with the Willamette River prominent throughout. The photo, taken from a high vantage point looking east, shows a vibrant city of growth and industry with multiple multi-story buildings, prominent churches and an active waterfront. Good condition, rear hinge split, rear cover worn. All photos present.
