With a Ph.D. from Hartford Theological Seminary (1936), Fast was an active churchman in the General Conference Mennonite Church and served as Director of the Mennonite Central Committee's relief services in Europe. From 1940-1943 he served as Director of Civilian Public Service under the Mennonite Central Committee's program of alternative service for conscientious objectors.
