The Gold Spoon Oration, a set of three successive speeches made by Congressman Charles Ogle of Pennsylvania in support of presidential candidate William Henry Harrison. (illustrator). First Edition Thus. Includes the following speeches: "The Regal Splendor of the President's Palace," April 14, 1840; "Pretended Democracy of Martin Van Buren," April 15, 1840; and "The Character and Services of General William Henry Harrison," April 16, 1840. All three speeches bound at the spine, previously removed from bound volume. Faint foxing to edges, a near fine example. (Sabin 56844) (American Imprints 40-5124-6) (Miles 144). "The Regal Splendor of the President's Palace" is also known as the "Gold Spoon Oration," and is recognized as one of the best argued political attacks in American history. Ogle's three consecutive speeches were critical to Harrison's defeat over the incumbent president, Martin Van Buren, in the 1840 presidential election.
