First Edition
Pamphlet. Condition: Good. First Edition. Modern gray wrapper, 8 x 5 3/4 inches, 46 clean pages, publisher's adverts on the original wrapper, some old creasing. Written in response to the ordination to the deaconate of Arthur Carey (1822-1844), which was controversial due to his support of the Oxford Movement and his statements that he did not see any difference between the Episcopal Church and that of Rome. He had already be investigated and exonerated in this regard, but his pastor (Rev. Hugh Smith) objected, and was attacked in the July 8, 1843 issue of The Churchman. This response contains all of the proofs that the authors could muster - including written records of interviews - to prove that Carey was not suitable for the position to which he was ordained.Carey held his first service in October, 1843. He fell ill soon afterwards, went to Cuba to recover his health, and died on the voyage to Havana, April 4, 1844, and was buried at sea.
