The haste in which Roger Williams had to flee to what became Providence Plantations to begin his settlement in exile resulted in inadequ…ate arrangements regarding boundaries and the various ways one could hold property. Also, the political arrangements were not agreed upon by all, and the development of the colony was hindered by disagreements and misunderstanding. Our author delves into the colonial records to try to make sense of what was actually taking place in the early years of Rhode Island.Henry Crawford Dorr (1820-1897), b. Providence, Rhode Island; d. New York City. He was the brother of Thomas Wilson Dorr, leader of the Dorr Rebellion, a militant effort to change the suffrage of Rhode Island, which was still operating under the colonial charter. Henry Crawford Dorr was a graduate of Brown University and of Harvard Law School, and was an attorney by profession. He was also an historian, a member of the Century Association for fifty years. At the age of 70 Dorr undertook to learn Hebrew, that he might read the Psalms of David in the original language. "He was the typical scholar even to his personal appearance. Intensely shy, modest and retiring, he was a perfect encyclopedia of learning.His lectures before the Rhode Island Historical Society were greatly valued, and are preserved in the archives of that body." - The Century Association Archives Foundation, Member Directory.
