Sent on the behalf of General Scarlet and Counter Signed by Irish Colonel Thomas Henry Pakenham. Dated 1855. A letter discussing the attachment of 6 mules to the Transport of the Cavalry Division and also for services to the Principal Medical Officer. Colonel Packenham 1826-1913 was an Irish Conservative politician and British Army officer. He fought in the Crimean War in 1854 and in the Fenian raids in 1866. He was first elected as the Member of Parliament for Antrim in 1854, succeeding his brother Edward Pakenham, who was killed at the Battle of Inkerman. General Sir James Yorke Scarlett 1799-1871 was a British Army officer and hero of the Crimean War who led the Charge of the Heavy Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854. According to the thesis, in the ancient world individuals were tightly bound by status to traditional groups, while in the modern one, in which individuals are viewed as autonomous agents, they are free to make contracts and form associations with whomever they choose. Dated 1877. A brief letter to discussing Edward Gibbons and a reply by Maine to tell Froude he has been elected a member of the club. James Anthony Froude 1818-1894 was an English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. From his upbringing amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude intended to become a clergyman, but doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, published in his scandalous 1849 novel The Nemesis of Faith, drove him to abandon his religious career. Froude turned to writing history, becoming one of the best-known historians of his time for his History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada. Sir Henry James Sumner Maine 1822-1888, was a British Whig comparative jurist and historian. He is famous for the thesis outlined in his book Ancient Law that law and society developed "from status to contract."
