No Binding. Condition: Poor. Unique. A Woodcut headed Coaching Broadside for the journey from Litchfield to London via Birmingham (see notes below) Placing the date of this Poster c1760 with a fee of £1/7/0 up from the £1/5/0. The coachmen and proprietors shared the driving between them. The poster is damaged and pasted onto old blue album paper, there is a fold line which has split quite badly and has a little archival tape repair on the reverse at the bottom, which states they have a "Hearse" and a "Post-Chaise" for hire also from the Coach and Horses in Litchfield. Age marks and browning, damp stain to left edge and pasted in with wrinkles but all legible Approx 40 x 20 cm. on the back pasted in is the supplement section of the Birmingham Journal for Oct 14th 1854 and the report on the Battle of Alma, this split/cut at centre fold line, no loss. Note* London Evening-Post, 12 May 1761. The three proprietors were Anthony Jackson, a Lichfieldinnkeeper, Thomas Whaley, a London innkeeper, and Henry Secret, who horsed Jackson's Lichfield coach between Daventry and London QUOTE: "The first regular weekly stage coach between London and Birmingham was initiated by Nicholas Rothwell in 1731 and made the journey in two and a half days (down from coaches taking four days in 1659 and three days in 1702).* By 1742 faster coaches, named 'flying coaches', were making the journey in only two days, and different proprietors ran different routes; the Lichfield and Birmingham route began on 12th April 1742. In 1747 a journey on the Birmingham and Warwick stage coach to London cost 1l 5s, but the traveller was 'answerable for jewels, rings, watches, money, or plate". Placing the date of this Poster c1760 with a fee of £1/7/0 up from the £1/5/0.
