One Of A Large Collection Of Original Antique Engravings Formed By A Southern California Artist In The Early To Middle Twentieth Century. Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Henry Thomas Ryall (1811 - 1867) Was An English Line, Stipple And Mixed-Method Engraver And Later Used Mixed Mezzotint. Ryall Was Appointed The Royal Engraver By Queen Victoria. Forty Of His Works Are In The National Portrait Gallery In London. He Was A Pupil Of Samuel William Reynolds, The Mezzotinto Engraver, But The Style In Which He At First Worked Was That Known As 'Chalk' Or 'Stipple.' He Began His Career By Engraving Plates For The Editions Of Edmund Lodge's Portraits Of Illustrious Personages Of Great Britain, And For The Series Of Portraits Of Eminent Conservatives And Statesmen, As Well As For Charles Heath's Book Of Beauty And Other Works.
