Condition: NEAR FINE. First printing. "The Vice President Speaks Out About Peach and War!" Selected speeches and articles of Wallace for the period 1933-1944, including when he was serving as the 33rd Vice President of the United States under Franklin D. Roosevelt, chosen and arranged by Lord to illustrate Wallace's political credo. Wallace was a strong supportor of the New Deal and presided over a major shift in federal agricultural policy, implementing measures designed to curtail agricultural surpluses and to address rural poverty. After Roosevelt died in 1945 and Truman succeeded him as president, "Wallace continued to serve as Secretary of Commerce until September 1946, when he was fired by Truman for delivering a speech urging conciliatory policies toward the Soviet Union. Wallace and his supporters then established the nationwide Progressive Party and launched a third-party campaign for president which called for conciliatory policies toward the USSR, desegregation of public schools, racial and gender equality, a national health-insurance program, and other left-wing policies." (Wikipedia) Among the topics covered in this book are the farm crisis, soil and the general welfare, the power of books, the price of free world victory , the danger of American fascism and much more. Illustrated with a frontispiece and other photographs. Index. Newspaper clippings laid in. 280 pp. Near fine in tan boards in a near fine dust jacket with some offsetting on the front flap.

Cloth. Condition: Good. Volume XXX , No. 1 - 31 ( Jan. 6 through Aug. 4 , 1905 ) , 33 , 34 , Index for 1905 . No. 1 - 31 are bound in a sturdy binding with heavy cloth boards. Nos. 33 , 34 , and the Index are laid in at the back of the volume. Overall , the material is in very good shape. There are a few small chips and tears but the binding has protected the material very well over the years. Nos. 33 and 34 show tears at the bottom with some material missing , damage probably resulting from them not being in the bound material. The boards and spine now show wear and soil but the hinges are tight. This is a great wealth of social , economic , agricultural , and advertising material for 1905. Wonderful drawings and photographs , especially of livestock. The extensive articles and essays are exceedingly well done overall , providing a gold mine of information and analysis. This, of course , is the publication that propelled Henry A. Wallace to national attention , to the Roosevelt cabinet , the Vice Presidency , and the formation of the Progressive Party.
