Volume one, extremities worn, couple of water spots on the front cover, else G; volume two, dampstaining at the top corner of the front cover, and at the top and fore edge of the rear cover, else G. Solon Robinson, (1803-1880), pioneer, agriculturist, and author, was born in Connecticut and settled in Indiana in 1830. He moved to northern Indiana, settling very early in Lake County, and serving as county clerk, justice of the peace, and postmaster. He helped organize the U.S. Agricultural Society in 1852 which was influential in the establishment of the Department of Agriculture a few years later. During the 1840's he traveled to practically every state in the Union and reported his observations in The Cultivator, Prairie Farmer, and American Agriculturist. These travel sketches today form an invaluable historical record of rural society of that period. He also published The Plow and was agricultural editor of the New York Tribune. He was one of the most important agricultural writers of the ante-bellum period. Includes hundreds of letters, notices, essays, and short pieces by Robinson and a short biography by Kellar.
