Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Original publisher's pink-orange paper wrappers with staple binding. Illustration and lettering printed in black ink on front cover. No lettering on spine. 6" x 9 1/4." Twenty-four pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning. Covers are clean and intact except for moderate fading or sunning (most noticeable along spine and edges). A Very Good copy. Part of the "Academic Reprints Series." Fascinating paper by Herbert E. Bolton containing his thesis that missions were frontier institutions of Spanish-American colonies. He addresses a number of subjects in connection to his thesis. Bolton argues that missionaries were instrumental in Spanish colonization (alongside conquistadors and presidial soldiers) and the spread of Spanish culture in the Western world. He focuses his paper on northern Spanish colonies "from Sinaloa to Texas, from Florida to California." He says that different colonizing countries had different "frontier agents" who colonized North America through their policies and actions. For example, of Spain, he says its frontier agents were missionaries, conquistadors, and soldiers. Of France, Bolton says that fur trappers and traders were its frontier agents. Of the United States, Bolton says its frontier agents were fur trappers and settlers. Bolton argues that "[i]n respect to the native, Spanish sovereigns, from the outset, had three fundamental purposes. They desired to convert him, to civilize him, and to exploit him." Bolton portrays the missions and the pueblos or villages they were a part of as political institutions that simultaneously exploited Indigenous Peoples while having an evangelical and humanitarian intent. Bolton explains how the encomienda (land trust) system and its ruling encomendaros (secular landowners) were eventually replaced by missions and missionaries to combat corruption and extreme exploitation of Indigenous Peoples. While exploitation still happened in the mission system, Bolton says that missionaries were viewed by the Spanish sovereigns as diplomatic figures who curtailed corruption and doubled as political, frontier agents spreading Spanish policies and culture. Bolton mentions the travels of several Spanish missionaries, such as Kino and Friar Marcos, who traveled alone for manny miles to complete their mission work. Bolton also describes some of the missions that succeeded and failed, some of the daily life aspects of specific missions, and the treatment and expectations of Indigenous Peoples at missions by Spanish missionaries and soldiers. Herbert E. Bolton (1870-1953) was an American historian and professor who specialized in the study of Spanish-Ameircan history. He taught as a history professor at the University of Texas (1901-1909) and University of California, Berkeley (c. 1911-1944). Bolton also served as chair of UC Berkeley's history department for twenty-two years and was the founding director of the Bancroft Library. He is widely credited for being a key figure in making the Bancroft Library the eminent research center it is today.
