Handwritten diary kept by Herbert Mortimer Hyde, which was written in an 1867 diary, and keeps track of different travel from 1867-1892. It starts in 1867 with a tour in Europe, which begins with his passage on the SS Arago and lands in France. He visits other places including Geneva, Lucerne, Munich, Zurich, Baden-Baden, Antwerp, London, York, etc. The next trip starts in June, 1874, where he boards the Thuringia in Hoboken, and he sets sail for Europe again, and then in 1888, he sailed on the Servia for another trip to Europe. More trips follow up to 1892. Most days in this 1867 diary are filled out, along with newspaper clippings of different voyages, with passengers, and one account of two steamships colliding. He writes notes on some pages, and at the end of the diary there is writing in crosshatch, which can be difficult to make out. Herbert Mortimer Hyde, died in 1929 at the age of 79 at his home in New York City, and his obit appears in the New York Times. He was the son of Edwin Hyde, one of the leading New York merchants of the 19th century and a descendant of colonists from England who helped settle New England. His wife died a year before him and they had no children. The diary is mostly legible and in good condition.
