Published by Fraternal Trade Association, 1932
Seller: Flamingo Books, Menifee, CA, U.S.A.
Condition: Fair. 1932 signed first edition / author's copy, Fraternal Trade Association / K.E. Foundation (Denver, Colorado), 5 3/8 x 7 1/8 inches tall green cloth hardcover, no dust jacket, gilt lettering to front cover, 48 pp. Moderate spotting/staining, and light rubbing and edgewear to the covers. Light 1 1/2-inch stain to the lower margin of all pages throughout the volume, not effecting text. Author's signature and address to front pastedown in period hand. On the last page of text, in the same blue ink, the author has lined out the organization's address in Denver, where he apparently once lived and worked, and has inserted his subsequent San Diego, California address. Despite these detractions in appearance, still an excellent copy of this exceptionally rare work, a proposal for addressing the impact of the Great Depression. OCLC (No. 1518527) locates only two copies at institutions worldwide. ~SP05~ [1.0P] The author, J. Herbert Pratt of Denver, and later San Diego, apparently was the moving force behind the Fraternal Trade Association ('F.T.A.'), which apparently advocated for a system of 'exchange' or 'trade' between American cooperative associations, in an effort to avoid the crushing poverty caused by The Great Depression of the 1930s, which was at its depths when this was published in 1932. The book sets forth its proposal - 'The F.T.A. Plan' - and gives examples of its application to show how it works. It indicates the F.T.A. was a 'subsidiary of the K.E. Foundation, an international organization with official headquarters in Denver.' Rare.
