Daniel Webster Hering, Ph.D. (born 1850, died 1938) was an American physicist and university dean. He was the author of Essentials of Physics for College Students (1912). Hering is credited with taking the first human x-ray in the United States on February 5, 1896 at Bellevue Hospital. Hering also was one of the original citations for Martin Gardner in his work Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science in which it is argued he founded the modern scientific skepticism movement. Hering's work Foibles and Fallacies of Science is considered one of the key original texts on matters concerning pseudoscience. ANTIQUE BOOKS DEN, WHERE HISTORY LIVES.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - 'Foibles and Fallacies of Science an Account of Celebrated Scientific Vagaries' is an engaging exploration of the eccentricities and errors that have marked the history of scientific inquiry. Daniel W. Hering provides a comprehensive account of celebrated scientific 'vagaries,' examining the persistent human fascination with ideas that fall outside the bounds of empirical reality. From alchemy and the quest for perpetual motion to the mysteries of divination and various pseudoscientific theories, this work illuminates the thin line between genuine discovery and intellectual folly.Hering's analysis serves as a compelling reminder of the challenges inherent in the pursuit of truth. By documenting these 'foibles,' the author highlights the evolution of the scientific method and the gradual triumph of rigorous observation over superstition and fallacy. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of science, the philosophy of knowledge, and the enduring capacity of the human imagination to construct elaborate systems of belief, regardless of their scientific validity. It remains a fascinating look at the detours taken on the road to modern enlightenment. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
