Seller: White Fox Rare Books and Antiques, ABAA/ILAB, New York, NY, U.S.A.
Cloth. Condition: Good. Oblong, 15.5 by 31 cm. 27 programs, each folded and quite long, all basically two-sided broadsides, and one overview season schedule, also a broadside, this one, single-sided. Gilt stamped name of "Herman E. Krawitz". Mr. Krawitz became a prominent impresario of high culture. Posts include heading the American Ballet Theater, Previous to that, he was the administrator at the Metropolitan Opera who orchestrated its move from its old house, at Broadway and 40th Street, to Lincoln Center. He also wrote a survey about the Met Opera which was published shortly after the new house opened. But previous to all that, Krawitz got his start in theatrical production, and his first position was in fact producing, under Richard Aldrich, the very summer stock offerings bound here together. Aldrich (1902 - 1986) was a prominent theatrical producer on Broadway, with credits including such offerings as "The Devil and Daniel Webster" and "Goodbye My Fancy" as well as numerous important revivals of classics. He is probably better known, though, as the third husband of Gertrude Lawrence, whom he survived, and indeed, he was depicted in the Julie Andrews biopic about Lawrence, "Star", which was released in 1968. The productions included a few performers who achieved prominence later, in musical theater and/or ballet, such as Loren Hightower and John Kriza. Cloth cover with some blistering, and some soiling. Tears and small chips by spine extremities. Some edge roughness and the like to the programs.
