He begins in conventional fashion, with a reference to 'Herman's countless friends', before continuing: 'As I write this there is in front of me part of a small collection of books I have each containing some personal inscription from its famous author. Among them is one from Herman. He had thought of me one evening, &, with his usual kindliness, he took a book from his collection, wrote in it, & brought it to me there & then. He spent most of that evening in my dressing room. - the last time I saw him. I am indeed proud to be called by him "my dear friend John"'. Roberts first appeared on stage in 1909. His first film was The Constant Nymph (1928). Other films were Night Train to Munich (1940) and Spitfire (1942). He also appeared in the BBC television series The Warden (1951). Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played as RMS Titanic went down.

3pp., 12mo. In poor condition, aged and worn, with the two leaves of the bifolium separated. The letter begins: 'My dear J. McG. | Pardon me, but M. Delormel did not write "The Boulanger" March ("En Revenat de la revue") nor did he write "Père la Victoire" but I dont say he didn't publish them.' Finck attributes the first to 'M. Desormes (the Conductor of the Folies Bergere Paris up to the time of his death about a year ago)', and the second to 'Louis Ganne who composed "Lorraine" March, also that hackneyed Mazurka the name of which I forget for the moment which goes like this: - | [Finck has written a line of musical score here]'. In a postscript he states that 'The "Star" scintillator also erred thusly in the work that has gone.' The third page carries a humorous remark attributed by Finck to Cuvier, regarding 'the supposed definition of a lobster'. An extremely popular figure in London theatrical and musical circles, Finck was the musical director of the Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. His 'In the Shadows' was one of the last tunes played as RMS Titanic went down.

He knew that Finck was ill, but 'the news of his death broadcast on Friday night came as a shock to me. | He & I had known each other for many years, & specially during the last five or six years we had much to say to each other at the Savage, my admiration for him deepening the more I knew him.' Another member of the Savage Club, Philip Page, referred to Finck as 'the most genial man he ever knew', and this was 'endorsed by all his fellow Savages'. As 'Chairman of the House Dinner on Saturday night', Hammerton paid 'a brief tribute to him', and asked 'the Brethren who knew him so well to toast his memory in silence'. He ends with reference to '[a]nother dear friend of mine', who 'passed away within an hour or so of Herman - Sir Wm. Ramsay - to whose widow I have been writing tonight'. While Ramsay 'had his fill of years' at the age of 88, Finck hadn't, 'though his years were full & mostly lovely, and none of us who knew him well will ever hear one of his compositions played without feeling he is still with us . . . dear old Herman.'
