Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Oxford University Press, NY; 1981. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Unstated edition, a possible book club edition. 8-3/8" tall, 290 numbered pages includes "Notes", "Selected Bibliography" and "Index". Exterior of book is pristine: it is spotlessly clean, square, free of corner bumps and edge dings, head and heel of spine undamaged; hinges quite strong and not damaged. Inked name/date/city on back of FFEP; both the title and the half title page have a 1-1/2" circular owner's stamp impressed into them; other than that, the interior is free of writing, stray marks, stains and any sort of paper damage;; end page maps of Davis Bend (1818-1861) and Davis Island (1980) are essential for understanding the text. Jacket is in good condition the front flap is completely detached from the rest of the jacket; there are no other tears or chips. But the backside of the jacket had masking tape attached--along top and bottom edges, up both folds and the entire spine. The tape has not affected the binding at all, but it has discolored the jacket wherever it was attached (see photos) and made the paper a little brittle. Jacket is now inn a mylar cover. Despite the stains on the jacket from the masking tape, this remains a very fine copy. This may be a BCE: it does have a price listed on the front flap and there is no 'slug' on the rear board, but there is no printing history on the copyright page and the rear flap says that this title is "A History Book Club Alternate Selection", which makes me a bit suspicious.
