[.] Wir finden zwar fast in jedem Lehrbuche der Mathematik die Auflösung der Aufgabe ?Auf einer gegebenen Fläche eine Sonnenuhr zu verzeichnen?, aber stets nur auf analytischem Wege (durch Rechnung) welcher wenigstens die vollkommene Kenntniß der sphärischen Trigonometrie voraussetzt, was natürlich mit dem Berufe und Wirkungskreise Weniger übereinstimmt. Selbst das vor einiger Zeit erschienene Schriftchen ?Gnomonik oder Construction aller Arten von Sonnenuhren?, vom Astronomen Litrow [i.e. J. J. v. Littrow] in Wien, ist analytisch und nur für Mathematikbeflissene bestimmt, die auch ohne dasselbe Sonnenuhren zu berechnen wissen müssen, für die es aber viele bequeme Formeln enthält. Der Wunsch nun, diese Wissenschaft [.] so vielen wie möglich zugänglich zu machen, veranlasste mich zu dem Entwurfe dieses Werkchens, welches in systematischer Zusammenstellung [.] die Construction der anwendbarsten Arten der Sonnenuhren mit Thierkrieszeichen und Beleuchtungsscalen [.] enthält und das keine andern Kenntnisse voraussetzt , als den Gebrauch des Zirkels und Transporteurs [etc.].?
