Die Geschichte der Stadt hat früh das historische Interesse des Schülers geweckt, ihm aber auch literarische und musikalische Anregungen vermittelt. Denn durch Ludwig von Anhalt-Köthen und seine "Fruchtbringende Gesellschaft" wurde schon im 17. Jahrhundert die deutsche Sprache und Dichtkunst gefördert. Später war Bach in Köthen Hofkapellmeister.
