The work of the painter and printmaker Louis-Adolphe Hervier is characterised by his love and respect for the life of the common people, peasants and fishermen. In the field of nineteenth century French graphic arts, his etchings and lithographs are significant and of real quality. Yet, outside the circle of specialists and collectors, Hervier has - until now - been neglected. Apart from his work, Hervier hardly left any traces, and little is known of Hervier's life. However, his annotations, the dates and locations on his countless drawings and watercolours, do provide some insight into his existence. Many of these are used in this book to illustrate his biography.
