Paperback. Condition: New. Explores cities of exile from different perspectives and presents different methods and sources for exile and urban studies. The essays are written by internationally recognized scholars, and contain a wide range of themes including mapping, oral history, queerness, photography. This book will make a s…ignificant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on historical exile, cities and modernities, as well as present multidisciplinary exile research from an urban perspective. With a blend of case studies, and theoretical approaches, it interweaves histories of modernism and exile in different urban environments and focuses on historical dislocations in the first half of the twentieth century, when artistic and urban movements constituted themselves in global exchange. Although this book takes a historical perspective, it is written with an awareness of current flight movements and will make a significant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on exile. The knowledge of previous historical exile experiences is important for the understanding of contemporary flight movements: after all, these are not singular phenomena. For migration movements in the first half of the 20th century and for those of today, it is equally possible to speak of urban centres of attraction for refugees: Today, Berlin is a European metropolis of exile; in the 1930s and 1940s, Paris, Prague, London, New York, Istanbul and Shanghai were destinations for refugees. With contributions from Maddalena Alvi, Ekaterina Aygün, Claudia Cendales Paredes, Julia Eichenberg, Margit Franz, Nils Grosch, Mareike Hetschold, Louis Kaplan, Laura Karp Lugo, Katya Knyazeva, Merve Köksal, Rachel Lee, Chris McConville, Anna Messner, Alexis Nuselovici, Robert Pascoe, Valentina Pino Reyes, Helene Roth, Valeria Sánchez Michel, Marine Schütz, Seza Sinanlar Uslu, Felicitas Söhner, Mareike Schwarz, Marina Sorokina, Xin Tong, Diana Wechsler, Jessica Williams Stark and Federico Vitelli.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Fresh perspectives on a relevant topic: the ways experiences of exile shape cities. Migration has transformed urban spaces around the world as new residents form communities, neighborhoods, and art spaces, changing perceptions of these cityscapes among migrants and locals alike. Yet exile re…search rarely adopts an urban perspective. Urban Exile fills this gap, anthologizing research on exile, cities, and modernities with a focus on the first half of the twentieth century. Drawing on examples from a wide range of urban centers in both the Global North and South, contributors from various disciplines share novel approaches and research practices for investigating how exile and urbanity intertwine. Their work illuminates the challenges and benefits surrounding the nexus of exile and urban research, discussing mapping, oral history, queerness, photography, and more. By selecting exile as a central category for methodological and theoretical investigations of urban culture, the book rethinks the application of this term in a transnational and historical context. Intersectional and international in its approach, Urban Exile collects transformative research on a pressing contemporary issue. Explores cities of exile from different perspectives and presents different methods and sources for exile and urban studies. Internationally recognized scholars writing on themes including mapping, oral history, queerness, photography. A significant contribution to the theory and methodology of research on historical exile. 90 b/w, 18 col. illus. Paperback. Condition: New. The impact of migrating artists on modern art Exile and migration played a critical role in the diffusion and development of modernism around the globe, yet have remained largely understudied phenomena within art historiography. Focusing on the intersections of exile, artistic practice, and urban space…, this volume brings together contributions by international researchers committed to revising the historiography of modern art. It pays particular attention to metropolitan areas that were settled by migrant artists in the first half of the 20th century. These arrival cities became hubs of artistic activities and transcultural contact zones where ideas circulated, collaborations emerged, and concepts developed. Taking six major cities as a starting point - Bombay (now Mumbai), Buenos Aires, Istanbul, London, New York, and Shanghai - the authors explore how urban topographies and landscapes were modified by exiled artists re-establishing their practices in these and other metropolises across the world. Questioning the established canon of Western modernism, Arrival Cities investigates how the migration of artists to different urban spaces impacted their work and the historiography of art. In doing so, it aims to encourage the discussion between scholars from different research fields, such as exile studies, art history, architectural history, design history, urban studies, and history.
