Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast. …

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the captivating history and awe-inspiring grandeur of the Grand Canyon, a natural wonder that has mesmerized explorers and nature enthusiasts for centuries. The author traces the footsteps of early Spanish explorers and American expeditions, including the daring journey of John Wesley Powell, who navigated the treacherous Colorado River through the canyon's depths. Through vivid descriptions and scientific insights, the book paints a portrait of a landscape unlike any other, a vast and intricate system of canyons adorned with towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and a kaleidoscope of colors. The author's evocative prose transports readers to the heart of this geological marvel, where they can experience the canyon's immensity, its ever-changing moods, and its profound impact on the human spirit. More than just a travelogue, this book explores the interplay between humanity and nature, revealing the challenges and triumphs of those who have dared to explore the canyon's depths and the enduring legacy of the indigenous people who have called this region home for millennia. It delves into the geological forces that shaped the canyon over millions of years, offering a glimpse into the Earth's history and the processes that continue to sculpt its landscapes. Ultimately, the book celebrates the Grand Canyon as a testament to the power and artistry of nature, a place where the boundaries of human perception are tested and the wonders of the natural world are revealed in their full glory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
