Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Tom was born in the Adirondacks of upstate New York. When he was two, his parents took him and his brother to St. Augustine for a winter vacation. He remembers seeing the dolphin show at Marineland and learning to swim in one of the motel pools. He has a picture of his brother riding a giant tortoise, possibly at the Alligator Farm. Later he earned a PhD and became an environmental engineer, working throughout the US and in 30 countries. He authored 3 books, The Hazardous Waste Minimization Handbook, The Pollution Prevention Handbook and Toxic Chemical: Risk Prevention through Use Reduction. Judy was born in Budapest, Hungary, leaving for the US after the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. She enjoyed writing and art in high school, and wanted to study art in college, but her father wanted her to study something more practical. She got her BA in Psychology and an MA in Counseling Psychology. She practiced counseling for a short time, but turned to writing and never gave up her desire to study art. Judy first visited St. Augustine with her cousin during a spring break from college. She was awed by the Ponce de Leon hotel, and enjoyed eating fresh oranges and swimming in the ocean. Judy and Tom met while working at Santa's Workshop, in the Adirondacks. She taught Tom her love of art, visiting museums around the world. They eventually took an art class at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington, and followed this with short classes by artists in the area. Based on an idea that Tom had, Judy wrote Opalescent, a historical environmental novel, set in the Adirondacks. The two then illustrated the book with pencil sketches. Judy went on to write Balsamere, a novel about a Great Camp set in the Adirondacks, Heirlooms, a novel, and Gold Pieces, a book of short stories based on immigrant experiences. Tom and Judy illustrated these books with pencil sketches. As they approached retirement age, they looked for a place that they could move to. They remembered fondly their earlier visits to St. Augustine, and 5 years ago bought a home in St. Augustine Beach and became Florida Residents. They spend 8 months of the year in St. Augustine with Piper, our Pomeranian who was born in Florida, and summers on Lake Champlain in Vermont. This book is a collection of pastels they drew and stories that they learned about their new home. This item is printed on demand. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This collection of stories is divided into two sections: In Exile and Losses. The first section contains stories of the Old Country, often told through the reminiscences of immigrants. Streets of Gold reveals the first impressions of a Hungarian family as they view the new world from the window of an airplane. Their expectations set them up for disappointments and misunderstandings as new immigrants. All Saints takes the reader back to an earlier era in Hungary when class differences and life styles divided society and assigned their roles to each segment. The Color of Sunday is a woman's reminiscences of her childhood in Hungary, painted with the vivid colors of a child's imagination. The second section, Losses, visits the many kinds of loss that we are prone to. In Mr. O'Leary the title character loses his former life and several aspects of his character. Nobody's Fault explores the loss of a child and the expectations placed upon the parents. In News of Your Death a woman of middle age mourns an old lover when his death stirs up old memories. Fate gives and takes away and our lives are always in the balance. This item is printed on demand. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In 1956 Hungary, one of Russia's satellites in Eastern Europe, revolted against the restrictive regime that controlled this country. During the short period of freedom that existed until Russian tanks quelled the revolution, spirits were high and hope ruled the population. When it became obvious that Hungary couldn't defend its freedom, citizens left the country by the thousands to begin a new life in the West. This novel follows the journey of one family as they make the difficult decision to leave their lives behind and look toward the future with hope. They take this huge step with trepidation, knowing that they will be burning bridges and going into the unknown. Heirlooms explores the response of three generations as they face the challenges of their new lives and environment. The book follows their disappointments, their struggles and failures and persistence in the face of many difficulties. Often they are torn between loyalty to their past, their history, and the demands of adjusting to that which is foreign and uncomfortable. Their struggle epitomizes the dilemma of the immigrant: caught between two worlds, not belonging to either, unable to call the new land truly their own. This item is printed on demand. William Durant built the first Great Camp which was the model for others that sprung up in the Adirondack Mountains and provided summer escapes for wealthy industrialists from New York. As his ideas evolved, he built several more between 1876 and 1901. He based his plans on the great estates of England and Europe with their outbuildings, bridges, and other decorative elements adapted to the local natural materials such as wood, bark, twigs, rocks and stone. The design was rustic, and included a main lodge for socializing as well as outbuildings serving as cabins for guests, dining room and boathouse, with an ice house and blacksmith shop, among others. Balsamere is a novel about a fictional Great Camp, inherited by Laura Skillman, a descendent of the family that built the camp, after it had fallen into disrepair. As Laura struggles to revive the camp, the story moves from the privileged lives of her relatives at the time of the Great Camps, through the stock market crash that depleted the family fortunes, to the present when the history of Balsamere and its long buried secrets are revealed. Add to basketPaperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Opalescent is a novel about the conflicts faced by an Adirondack company town when contamination of the water supply threatens both the community's health and financial viability. The name of the book is derived from the Opalescent River, which starts at Lake Tear of the Clouds, a small lake at the base of Mount Marcy, and is the source of the Hudson River. The story is told through current events and flashbacks to the founding of the town by Irish immigrants. It shows how the town and company evolved, building on the mountains' resources and adapting as those resources were depleted. The novel illustrates the challenges of preserving the environment of the Adirondacks while struggling to maintain the local economy. This item is printed on demand.
