Badger / The Gorham Press (Boston, Massachusetts), 5 1/8 x 7 1/8 inches tall pale blue cloth hardbound, no dust jacket, gilt stars design and lettering to front cover, gilt lettering to spine, 44 pp. Very slight soiling and mild rubbing and edgewear to covers. Shadow to front pastedown and offset to front free-endpaper from a no-longer-present label or bookplate. Nicely inscribed and signed by the author on the blank front free-endpaper, with an inked-out price at the top margin of the endpaper. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce collection of Jayhawker poet James Hilkey. OCLC (No. 18399294) locates only six copies at institutions worldwide - at the Library of Congress in Washington, Brown University, Ohio State, University of Michigan, New York Public Library and University of Kansas Archives. ~FFF~ James E. Hilkey (1882 - 1965) was born on a farm in Kansas, and lived there until he was 25. His careers were varied - farming for 20 years, teaching for five years, another five in mercantile work, four years as a county clerk and four years as a Kansas state senator. Hilkey's verse style has been compared to his favorite poet, 'Hoosier poet' James Whitcomb Riley (1849 - 1916).
