Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. London, Richard Bentley and Son, 1893. Octavo, xvi, 346 pages with 2 illustrations plus 6 plates (all with tissue-guards). Maroon cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, with Hill's facsimile signature on the front cover; top edge uncut; cloth a little sunned, rubbed and marked, with…light wear and some bumps at the extremities; mild signs of age and use; overall, an excellent copy. Frederic Hill (1803-1896), prison reformer, was a brother of Sir Rowland Hill (1795-1879) and Matthew Davenport Hill (1792-1872); all three were influential social reformers, with Rowland achieving fame in fields as diverse as educational reform, postal reform and the colonisation of South Australia. Provenance: S.M. Crompton, with her contemporary inscription on the verso of the half-title: 'S.M. Crompton from her son Alfred. February 1895'. Later ownership details in pencil appear on the recto ('C.W. Crompton from Stonyfell'). Susan Mary Crompton, née Clark (1846-1932) was a niece of the Hill brothers; her mother Caroline (1800-1877) was their sister. Caroline, her husband Francis Clark (1799-1853), and their eight children emigrated to South Australia in 1850, on the advice of Rowland and Matthew. Susan married Joseph Crompton (1840-1901), vigneron, manufacturer and exporter: 'Starting as wine-makers and distillers [at Stonyfell vineyards], and wine and spirits merchants, they later handled wool, sheepskins, fur skins, hides and tallow. Susan Mary Crompton worked with her sister, Caroline Emily Clark, on the "boarding out system" for destitute children and joined the committee of the State Children's Council in 1906. In World War I she was made a justice of the peace, one of the first women in South Australia chosen for this office' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
