The Della Robbia Pottery was a unique venture, not only for its diverse production, but also for the interest it has added to the history of Birkenhead - the town on the Wirral peninsula where it existed from 1894 to 1906. This interim report is published as a result of the increasing interest shown in Della Robbia and as one stage in its comprehensive research. The collection of this pottery at the Williamson Art Gallery has acted as a focal point in collating and researching material from many sources. The Senior Keeper at the Williamson Art Gallery, Mr. David Hillhouse, was responsible for much of the research for this catalogue. Birkenhead, Wirral is in Merseyside, on the Wirral Peninsula in the Northwest of England. The pottery took its name from the famous Italian artist, Luca Della Robbia. The pieces coming out of the pottery were fashioned along the traditional Arts & Crafts principles, using locally-sourced materials and true craftsmanship. VG interior; light wear to covers.

Upon individual petition, the state legislature granted the younger Hillhouse a charter to build the road; he describes the project, outlining requirements attached to the charter, materials that might be used for "Paving," and prospects for its financial success (for starters, 3500 wagons annually haul cotton through Washington to Augusta) and then poses a dozen questions primarily considering the technical aspects of the project to his uncle. James Hillhouse (1754-1832; U.S. Senator from Connecticut, 1796-1810), a lawyer and politician, who served in various public capacities, in the U.S. House and Senate and various Connecticut offices, including several years on the state Supreme Court of Errors, and for 50 years served as treasurer of Yale College. David P.
