Die Virtuositat und die kunstlerische Aussagekraft seiner Radierungen sind bis heute ein einflussreicher Massstab und eine Quelle der Inspiration geblieben. Der qualitatvolle, grosse Bestand von etwa 200 Rembrandt-Radierungen in den Graphischen Sammlungen Weimars wurde im Wesentlichen schon in der Goethezeit erworben. Treibende Kraft fur den Ankauf war Herzog Carl August. Unterstutzt und beraten wurde er bei den Erwerbungen fur das Graphische Kabinett von Johann Wolfgang Goethe und seinem Jugendfreund, dem Darmstadter Kriegsrat, Johann Heinrich Merck. Daneben hat Goethe Radierungen des Meisters bis ins hohe Alter auch fur seine private Kunstsammlung angekauft und sich kunsthistorisch mit Rembrandts Kunst auseinandergesetzt. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Rembrandt Research Project ist der gesamte Bestand der ehemaligen Grossherzoglichen, spater Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen, und der Goetheschen Sammlung nun erstmals einer detaillierten wissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung unterzogen worden, die im vorliegenden Band vollstandig publiziert wird.
