Paperback. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Wraps. Slim 4to.pp.25. Jugend Nr.8, 14 Februar 1911: Front cover pastel illustration by Paul Rieth of an attractive young woman in a mask. This issue features the work Paul Rieth with six further colour illustrations and has a theme of opulent gatherings peopled by masked women and gentlemen in full dress, including illustration referring to Viennese decadence painting a gentleman lifting a woman in the evening dress:"Wien in Munchen-Versaust's mei G'wand-i fahr in himmel" Illustration on rear cover by Erik Wilke. Many period advertisements add graphic and social interest to both magazines. Text in German./Jugend (1896Ð1940) Founded in Munich by Georg Hirth who edited it until his death in 1916, was an influential German arts magazine originally intended to showcase German Arts and Crafts, but became famous for showcasing the German version of Art Nouveau instead. It was also famed for its "shockingly brilliant covers and radical editorial tone" and for its avant-garde influence on German arts and culture for decades, ultimately launching the eponymous Jugendstil ('Youth Style') movement in Munich, Weimar, and Germany's Darmstadt Artists' Colony. /Albert Weisgerber (1878Ð1915) was a German painter whose work forms a bridge between Impressionism and early Expressionism. In 1898, he set up his own artists' group, Sturmfackel, with his friend Alfred Kubin. He earned his living making illustrations for the magazine Jugend. He was friends with artists Hans Purrmann, Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky, Max Slevogt, and Karl Arnold. Very good indeed.
