Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. **Bundle Up & Save On Postage** Ex-Library copy with usual library stickers on cover, moisture dimple on top edge of about 50 pages, otherwise without flaw. 6 X 9" 130 pages (2013). In 1956, pioneering psychedelic researchers Abram Hoffer and Humphry Osmond were invited to join memb…ers of the Red Pheasant First Nation near North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to participate in a peyote ceremony hosted by the Native American Church of Canada. Inspired by their experience, they wrote a series of essays explaining and defending the consumption of peyote and the practice of peyotism. Hoffer's sister, journalist Fannie Kahan documented the religious ceremony and wrote a history of peyote. Their writing advocates for Indigenous legal, political, and religious rights and offers important insights into how psychedelic researchers interpreted the peyote ceremony.

Good - Dust Jacket in Good condition - some wear and minor loss, in protective sleeve. Book in very good condition. 1972 1st Edition 5th Printing, THE HALLUCINOGENS By A. Hoffer and H. Osmond Author Bio…: Abram Hoffer (November 11, 1917 - May 27, 2009) was a Canadian biochemist, physician, and psychiatrist known for his "adrenochrome hypothesis" of schizoaffective disorders. According to Hoffer, megavitamin therapy and other nutritional interventions are potentially effective treatments for cancer and schizophrenia. Hoffer was also involved in studies of LSD as an experimental therapy for alcoholism and the discovery that high-dose niacin can be used to treat high cholesterol and other dyslipidemias. Humphry Fortescue Osmond (1 July 1917 - 6 February 2004) was an English psychiatrist who expatriated to Canada, then moved to work in the United States. He is known for inventing the word psychedelic and for his research into interesting and useful applications for psychedelic drugs. Osmond also explored aspects of the psychology of social environments, in particular how they influenced welfare or recovery in mental institutions. Synopsis: The Hallucinogens attempts to provide a detailed description of the hallucinogens in a single volume. Hallucinogens are chemicals which in nontoxic doses produce changes in perception, in thought, and in mood, but which seldom produce mental confusion, memory loss, or disorientation for person, place, and time. These latter changes are characteristic of organic brain reactions following intoxications with alcohol, anesthetics, and other toxic drugs. The book covers the following hallucinogens: plant ß-phenethylamines, d-lysergic acid diethylamide, ololiuqui, indole hallucinogens derived from tryptophan, and taraxein. The discussions include their chemistry, biochemistry, and neurophysiological effects. The final chapter deals with animal studies with hallucinogenic drugs. This work has been written for chemists, biochemists, psychologists, sociologists, and research physicians. While it cannot satisfy each group fully, it is sufficiently comprehensive and well documented so that each group can use it as a springboard for future enquiry into these fascinating chemicals. White cloth-covered boards, 9 1/2 x 6 3/8 inches, 252 pp. No remainder mark. "Perhaps even more startling is the fact that this book is primarily about a therapy for alcoholics which uses LSD. Amid al…l the bitter controversy concerning other uses of LSD, our authors --- who are among the very first scientific investigators of LSD decades before the public heard about it; Dr. Osmond is the acknowledged coiner of the term psychedelic --- have been quietly and without fanfare pursuing their scientific researches into LSD therapy for alcoholics. Here is their first report to the public on their successes."
